Hügels begrenzt, um das schon Tarquinius Priskus Hallen anlegen ließ (Liv. 1, 35 extr.), zwischen denen dann Kaufleute ihre Buden u. Gewölbe (tabernae), bes. die Wechsler ihre Wechselbuden od. -tische (argentariae od. mensae) aufschlugen; später mit einer Menge öffentlicher Gebäude umbaut u. mit unzähligen Statuen geschmückt, Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Lebens in Rom, wo der vornehme Römer eine bestimmte Zeit des Tages (vor Tische) zubrachte, um Geld- od. Rechtsgeschäfte abzumachen, an den gerichtlichen Verhandlungen teilzunehmen, Neuigkeiten zu hören u. dgl., aber auch der gemeine Römer sich einfand, um sich von den Vornehmen um seine Stimme angehen zu lassen, bes. aber um den müßigen Zuschauer abzugeben, namentlich gegen Abend, wo Wahrsager u. andere Gaukler auf dem Forum ihr Wesen trieben; vgl.
